General Dynamics Starts Construction on USNS Medgar Evers

General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) has started construction efforts on the future USNS Medgar Evers, the 13th ship built under the T-AKE program for the U.S. Navy. The ship is slated for delivery in the second quarter of 2012.

Once the ship enters into the fleet, it will be predominately used to stage U.S. Marine Corps equipment around the world. NASSCO’s shipyard is the only major one on the West Coast, according to General Dynamics.

The index, which tracks the stock performances of 30 major government contractors, ended at $4,786.97 for a 0.13% week-on-week gain.
