General Dynamics Awarded Contract for Iraqi Tanks

General Dynamics has received a contract to produce 140 M1A1 Situation Awareness tanks for the Iraqi military. The contract, worth $198 million, is slated for completion by May 31, 2011.

The Situation Awareness enhancements include a vision enhancing thermal viewer for the driver, a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) thermal sight, Tank Urban Survivability Kit (TUSK) improvements which are designed to provide better protection to tank crews fighting in urban environments. The tanks will also utilize new engines that improve performance while reducing maintenance requirements and costs.
