General Dynamics wins contract for Stryker Combat Vehicle

The US Army has awarded General Dynamics a contract to carry out work on Stryker Combat vehicles. The contract, worth $134 million, is expected to be completed by the end of June 2010.

Under the contract, General Dynamics Land Systems will engineering work and enhancements along with design work for up to 550 Stryker vehicles used in Operation Enduring Freedom. The Army’s three Stryker Combat teams are deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. They are designed to be resistant to improvised explosive devices (IEDs), infantry weapons and rocket propelled grenades (RPGs), all of which are popular insurgent weapons.

Currently, the Army has two Stryker teams in Iraq and one in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Operation Enduring Freedom is the name of the present operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and other areas of the world to combat terrorism.
