Northrop has developed a “space fence” for the US Air Force under a $30 million contract. The S-Band space fence will aide the Department of Defense in tracking Earth orbiting debris and satellites from a low to medium range. The global space surveillance ground radar system is replacing the 1961 VHF Air Force Space Surveillance System. Unlike the 1961 surveillance system, Northrop’s “space fence” can detect orbiting microscopic satellites. Australia will be the first site for the “space fence”, two additional locations for have yet to be announced.
“The new Space Fence system will provide better accuracy and faster detection while allowing us to increase the number of satellites and other space objects that can be detected and tracked, thus avoiding collision and damage to other satellites, ” according to Rich Davis, special projects director at Northrop Grumman.
