Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) has acquired the underwater drone manufacturing business of Columbia Group for an undisclosed amount.

The division will operate as a subsidiary known as Undersea Solutions Group within Newport News Shipbuilding’s submarine and fleet support division, Huntington Ingalls said Friday.

Matt Mulherin, HII corporate vice president and Newport News Shipbuilding president, said the company made the acquisition to add new manned and unmanned submersible design programs to Newport News Shipbuilding’s submarine work.

The renamed Undersea Solutions Group will continue to be based in Panama City Beach, Florida, where it works on unmanned underwater vehicles for the U.S. Navy and international clients.

“Together we can support the development of large and very large unmanned undersea vehicles and stay in step with the Navy as unmanned systems take on greater and more complex roles in the undersea battle space, ” said Ross Lindman,  a senior VP at the USG business.
