White House Issues Interim National Security Strategic Guidance

The White House has released a document providing guidance for federal agencies to align their actions as the administration develops a national security strategy.

The Biden administration’s Interim National Security Strategic Guidance, released Wednesday, describes the current global security landscape and outlines the country’s national security priorities.

Democracies are under siege and the distribution of power worldwide is evolving and creating new threats, the White House noted.

“Finally, running beneath many of these broad trends is a revolution in technology that poses both peril and promise. The world’s leading powers are racing to develop and deploy emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, that could shape everything from the economic and military balance among states to the future of work, wealth, and inequality within them,” the document reads.

The White House listed its national security priorities in the interim guidance, including modernizing and reinvigorating alliances and partnerships worldwide.

Other goals include making disciplined and smart choices with regard to national defense and responsible use of military while advancing the use of diplomacy as a “tool of first resort,” revitalizing U.S. democracy, investing in national security workforce and institutions, responding to public health and economic crises caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and enabling trade and international economic policies to serve all U.S. citizens.
