APL said Tuesday that Goldfein will build on his military experience to offer the laboratory insight on national challenges, space operations, strategic deterrence and combat readiness.
Goldfein spent four years as the Air Force’s 21st chief of staff and retired with the rank of general in August last year after 37 years of service.
“His significant experience as a pilot, commander and thought leader will be invaluable as we continue to develop transformational technologies with their ultimate impact in mind,” said Ralph Semmel, director of APL.
In his most recent role, Goldfein oversaw over 685,000 Air Force personnel around the world. He also served as director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and held roles such as vice chief of staff and head of the Air Forces Central Command.
His military career included overseas deployments such as operations Desert Storm, Desert Shield, Enduring Freedom and Allied Force.
