The U.K.’s ministry of defense could award a $2.9 billion contract for the purchase of 50 Apache helicopters to Boeing (NYSE: BA), The Telegraph reported Saturday.

“The Apache program is currently in its assessment phase, and we expect to make a decision by summer 2016, ” a spokesman for the U.K.’s MoD said, according to the report.
The report added Leonardo-Finmeccanica has also sought to secure the deal, which would sustain production within the U.K. at the company’s Somerset facility.
Westland, now a subsidiary of Leonardo-Finmeccanica, produced the original fleet of 67 Apache helicopters for the British armed forces, The Telegraph added.
