State Dept Clears $140M in Raytheon Missile Purchase Requests from South Korea

The State Department has given South Korea the green light to procure Raytheon-built AGM-65G-2 Maverick and AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder missiles under two foreign military sales agreements worth approximately $140 million combined.

South Korea requested to purchase 89 Maverick missiles, containers and related support under a potential $70 million FMS contract, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Wednesday.

The country also asked to buy 60 Sidewinder missiles, six AIM-9X-2 Block II tactical guidance units, spares, containers, government and contractor technical support and logistics services through a separate contract worth $70 million.

Raytheon will serve as the prime contractor for both FMS deals, which seek to help South Korea deter regional threats, build up its homeland defense and national security posture and participate in security operations in the Pacific region.

DSCA said it notified Congress of both FMS agreements Tuesday.

AGM-65 Maverick is a precision-attack missile designed for integration with fighter jets, helicopters and attack and patrol aircraft in support of maritime and close-air support missions.

AIM-9X Sidewinder is a short-range, infrared-tracking missile configured for installation on F-15, F-16 and other fighter jets for use in surface-to-air and air-to-air applications.
