The State Department has cleared Iraq’s request to procure follow-on technical support for U.S.-origin naval vessels and a ship repair facility under a potential $150 million foreign military sales agreement.
Iraq requested spare and repair parts; support and test equipment; publications and technical documentation; personnel training equipment; and engineering and logistics support services, among others, the Defense Security Cooperation Agencysaid Tuesday.
Swiftships will serve as prime contractor of the proposed sale and will carry out services for the Iraqi navy’s patrol boats, offshore support vessels, fast assault boats and rigid hull inflatable boats.
DSCA noted the FMS agreement will support Iraq’s coastal defense and security efforts as well as require the deployment and annual visit of U.S. government and contractor representatives to the country for technical reviews, support and oversight.
The agency does not not expect the deal to affect basic military balance in the region.
