State Department OKs Potential $1.8B P-8A Maritime Patrol Aircraft Sale to Germany

The State Department has approved Germany’s request to procure five Boeing-built (NYSE: BA) P-8A Poseidon maritime surveillance planes from the U.S. government through a potential $1.77 billion foreign military sale transaction.

The German government asked to buy P-8As to replace its current fleet of Lockheed Martin-made (NYSE: LMT) P-3C Orion aircraft, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Friday.

DSCA noted the possible sale will include nine Multifunctional Information Distribution System – Joint Tactical Radio Systems 5, a dozen LN-251 integrated global positioning and inertial navigation systems, AN/APY-10 radar technology, missile warning sensors and AN/PRC-117G manpack radios.

Engineering, logistics, repair and program support services are included in the FMS request.

Germany expects to retire its P-3C fleet in 2024 and sustain the country’s maritime surveillance capability over the next three decades through the procurement move.
