The departments of Defense and Health and Human Services awarded contracts totaling $104M to six companies for the procurement of safety needles and syringes as part of the U.S. government’s COVID-19 vaccine campaign.
The investment covers 500M syringes that will be integrated into the HHS Strategic National Stockpile throughout a one-year period, the DoD said Wednesday.
Syringe equipment will be used for COVID-19 vaccine candidates subject to the approval of the Food and Drug Administration. Contract work is expected to result in over 134M in vaccine deliveries by the end of the year, according to the notice.
Douglas Bryce, Joint Program Executive Officer for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense, said the initiative demonstrates the collaboration between government and industry partners in rapid vaccination efforts.

The U.S. Army Contracting Command – Aberdeen Proving Ground and JPEO-CBRND obligated Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act funds for the awards.
