Safran Defense and Space Inc. has acquired Attollo Engineering, a Camarillo, California-based company specializing in compact, high-performance imaging and laser sensing solutions. According to Safran DSI, the deal will expand its product portfolio and bolster its capabilities in advanced imaging technologies.
Attollo, which employs about 60 people, develops shortwave infrared and midwave infrared imaging systems, laser sensing technologies and small pixel pitch sensors with advanced functionality. Its solutions serve defense, aerospace and commercial markets, supporting missions that require enhanced situational awareness, target detection and surveillance.
“Attollo’s technology broadens Safran DSI’s reach across multiple platforms, enabling faster, more accurate execution no matter the mission,” said Joe Bogosian, president and CEO of Safran DSI. “Attollo’s advanced infrared and laser sensing technologies and cameras will significantly expand our U.S. customers’ capabilities in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.”
Atollo’s Application Portfolio
Attollo’s offerings cover a wide range of military and commercial applications. For airborne missions, its infrared cameras integrated into gimbals provide day-and-night surveillance unaffected by darkness, smoke, fog, rain or snow. On the ground, its high-definition and VGA format MWIR sensors support border patrol operations with low size, weight and power requirements, delivering more pixels on target in a compact form.
In maritime operations, Attollo’s infrared imaging enhances navigation and collision avoidance in challenging weather, supporting border security, search and rescue, and threat assessment. Its space solutions include infrared sensors and laser sensing devices for surveillance and situational awareness, with applications in both defensive and offensive space operations.
Additional uses span handheld, helmet-mounted and weapon-mounted systems for defense and law enforcement, as well as industrial, medical and agricultural applications where infrared technology enables early detection, inspection, and monitoring tasks.
Continued Operations and Growth
Michael MacDougal, CEO of Attollo Engineering, said the acquisition will allow the company to expand service to its existing customers while reaching new ones. Post-acquisition, Attollo will continue to operate as a merchant supplier of key sensors and subsystems across defense and commercial markets, maintaining its Camarillo operations while leveraging Safran DSI’s global resources and technical expertise.
“We are proud to be investing in jobs and cutting-edge technology in California,” Bogosian said. “By joining forces, we will accelerate our drive for innovation and building the future.”
