Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) has showcased the design of a sensor the Waltham, Mass.-based company will produce to replace the Patriot missile defense system’s current radar technology as part of a $384M contract from the U.S. Army.
The company presented a mock-up of the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor platform during the 2019 Association of the United States Army conference, Raytheon said Thursday.
LTAMDS will feature an active electronically-scanned radar designed to provide military operators a 360-degree coverage area and equipped with gallium nitride circuits for reinforced sensitivity and signal reception.
The Army aims to complete Patriot radar modernization efforts as early as 2022.
Raytheon noted it could offer LTAMDS to the international market if the U.S. government authorizes foreign sales of the technology.
