NIST Seeks Nominations for Appointment to Internet of Things Advisory Board

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has issued a call for nominations to serve on the inaugural internet of things advisory board in accordance with the provisions of the fiscal year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act and the Federal Advisory Committee Act.

The IoTAB would provide advice to the IoT federal working group on identification of any federal statutes, regulations, budgetary challenges and other sector-specific policies that could impede IoT development; challenges and opportunities related to the use of IoT technologies by small businesses; and availability of adequate spectrum to support IoT, according to a notice published Thursday.

The 16-member board would also advise on situations in which the use of IoT is likely to bring societal and economic benefits to the U.S., including smart traffic and transit technologies; health care; public safety; supply chains and augmented logistics; precision agriculture; environmental monitoring; and sustainable infrastructure.

The board will submit to the federal working group a report containing its recommendations and findings, set its own agenda and take into consideration the working group’s suggested topics to study.

The Department of Commerce’s secretary will appoint the board members, who will serve two-year terms.

Nominations for appointment to the board are due Feb. 28.
