“This investment provides the resources our shipbuilders, shipyards, and suppliers need to modernize their operations and succeed in meeting our nation’s defense requirements,” Secretary of the Navy John Phelan said in a statement published Tuesday.

“By enabling industry to adopt AI and autonomy tools at scale, we’re helping the shipbuilding industry improve schedules, increase capacity, and reduce costs. This is about doing business smarter and building the industrial capability our Navy and nation require,” Phelan added.

What Is the Focus of the Navy’s Ship OS Investment?

Under the strategic investment, Ship OS will use Palantir Technologies‘ software to introduce modern best practices to the Navy shipbuilding environment.

According to the Navy, the initial investment will focus on shipbuilders, critical suppliers and shipyards within the submarine industrial base.

The Maritime Industrial Base Program, in collaboration with the Naval Sea Systems Command, will manage the initiative. Through this effort, the service will aggregate data from legacy databases, enterprise resource planning systems, and operational sources to streamline engineering workflows, advance proactive risk mitigation and identify bottlenecks, applying a data-driven approach to production management.

Under the initiative, the Navy will validate approaches and develop implementation strategies that can be applied to surface ship programs.
