MDA said Friday prototypes that will emerge through the OTAs will be integrated with the Aegis ballistic missile defense system.
“Multiple awards allow us to execute a risk reduction phase to explore industry concepts and maximize the benefits of a competitive environment to demonstrate the most effective and reliable Glide Phase Interceptor for regional hypersonic defense, as soon as possible,” said Rear Adm. Tom Druggan, Sea-based Weapon Systems program executive at MDA.
The agency said it expects the interceptors to be integrated with the updated Baseline 9 Aegis weapon system and be fired using the Vertical Launch System aboard the U.S. Navy’s Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense destroyers.
The Department of Defense said Friday Raytheon Missiles and Defense and Lockheed each secured an OTA worth approximately $20.9 million, while Northrop’s OTA award is valued at $18.9 million.
The companies will each get $8 million in research, development, test and evaluation funds at the time of award and perform their work at the respective sites in Arizona, Alabama, California and Pennsylvania through September 2022.
