MDA Awards Spots to Over 1,000 Contractors on $151B SHIELD Contract for Golden Dome

The Missile Defense Agency has awarded 1,014 companies positions on the new Scalable Homeland Innovative Enterprise Layered Defense contract, a potential 10-year, $151 billion vehicle for the Golden Dome multi-layer missile defense architecture. The first tranche of staggered awards establishes the competitive pool while the agency continues discussions with other offerors, according to a notice posted on SAM.gov on Tuesday.

SHIELD enables faster acquisition of technologies underpinning layered homeland missile defense, the Department of War said. Task orders are expected to emphasize open systems design, model-based systems engineering and, where applicable, artificial intelligence, machine learning and rapid prototyping to field capability at greater speed.

SHIELD reflects a major shift in how the Pentagon acquires advanced missile defense capabilities. At the 2026 Defense R&D Summit on Jan. 29, defense leaders and top industry innovators will break down how new contracting models are unlocking the speed and scale needed to counter evolving threats. Register now to engage in the discussions driving America’s next-generation defense architecture.
