MBDA has received an estimated $239 million contract from the U.K. defense ministry to provide infrared air-to-air missiles for the country’s F-35 Lightning II fighter jet fleet.
The Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile will be the first missile from a U.K. company that will integrate with the Lockheed Martin-built (NYSE: LMT) F-35, MBDA said Tuesday.
ASRAAM’s rocket motor and aerodynamic design works to support high kinematic functions, the company added.
The missile has autonomous infrared search-and-track features and is designed to receive target information from aircraft sensors.
MBDA will manufacture the guided missiles at its Bolton manufacturing and assembly facility and host engineering work at its sites in Stevenage and Bristol.
The company is also under an ASRAAM capability sustainment program contract for the Typhoon jet.
