IBM (NYSE: IBM) has won a potential $60M cost reimbursement contract from the U.S. Air Force to design, verify, fabricate and test a prototype neural inference processor.
The company will develop the artificial intelligence and machine learning processor technology for the NorthPole Software/Hardware program, the Department of Defense said Friday.
The Air Force received two offers for the project via a competitive acquisition process. Contract work will take place in San Jose, Calif., through Nov. 16, 2021.
The award comes nearly one year after IBM received a $14.8M contract to help the service branch create software and hardware specifications for the next-generation neural inference machine.
