Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) has received a potential $165.5 million contract from the U.S. Navy to obtain long-lead-time materials and conduct advance construction efforts for the first Flight IISan Antonio-class amphibious transport dock.
The company said Friday it will use contract funds to procure the future LPD 30 ship’s major components such as main engines, diesel generators, deck equipment, shafting, propellers and valves.
HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division plans to collaborate with 400 suppliers in support of the Navy’s LPD Flight II program.
The service branch intends to replace its legacy Whidbey Island- and Harpers Ferry-class fleet with the second flight of San Antonio-class ships.
LPD Flight II ships will be built to address ship-to-shore connection, CH-53K helicopter accommodation and weapon stowage requirements of the Navy and U.S. Marine Corps.
San Antonio-class ships are designed for amphibious and expeditionary operations encompassing sea control, power projection, humanitarian assistance and disaster response.
