Lt. Gen. Chance Saltzman – deputy chief of space operations for operations, cyber and nuclear at the U.S. Space Force — has received Senate confirmation to serve as the branch’s chief of operations.
His rank will change to general and he will succeed Gen. John “Jay” Raymond, who will retire from the military after 38 years of service, the U.S. Air Force said Friday.
Saltzman, who was nominated by President Biden in July, is set to take command of USSF as the space service branch transitions from its early stages to full operation and satellite modernization.
At a Sept. 13 Senate committee hearing, Saltzman vowed to prioritize technology development and personnel training as part of his agenda.
Raymond, a 2022 Wash100 Award recipient, said he believes the team will be “in great hands” with Saltzman as CSO.
