A team of General Electric (NYSE: GE) and Ford (NYSE: G) has been awarded a Defense Production Act contract worth potentially $336M to produce ventilators for the Department of Health and Human Services.
Both companies will work to deliver 50K machines by July 13, HHS said Thursday. The award is part of the Trump administration’s COVID-19 response efforts through the DPA program.
The department looks to acquire over 41K ventilators by the end of next month and a total of 187K by the end of the year.
HHS Secretary Alex Azar said contracts have been put in place to secure over 117K ventilators within 100 days in line with administration’s goal of producing 100K of the equipment within that time period.
“Thousands of ventilators delivered to the Strategic National Stockpile starting this month, continuing through the spring and summer, will mean we have more capacity to respond to the pandemic as it evolves.”
HHS unveiled earlier this week a list of companies tasked to produce the breathing equipment under contracts worth $1.4B combined.
