Army, Rheinmetall Sign Cooperative Agreement to Develop Combat Vehicle Tech

The U.S. Army and a subsidiary of German defense company Rheinmetall have agreed to jointly develop combat vehicle technologies under a cooperative research and development agreement.

American Rheinmetall Vehicles will collaborate with the Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Armaments Center to conduct R&D work focused on ammunition, fire control and weapon systems, the company said Thursday.

The partnership could include will digital engineering, prototyping, simulation and modeling efforts in various technology areas such as robotics, power management and programmable munition lethality.

Both parties will consider exploring the potential integration of the service branch’s XM913 50mm cannon onto Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle platform offerings.

Rheinmetall made a bid for the second phase of the Army’s OMFV program.
