Antenna Research Associates Merges With Empower RF Systems to Expand RF Capabilities

  • ARA-Empower RF merger pairs antenna engineering with high-power RF amplification
  • Technologies support counter-UAS, electronic warfare and radar applications
  • Merger supports ARA’s RF technology growth strategy

Antenna Research Associates has merged with Empower RF Systems as defense customers seek technologies to address operational requirements in contested environments. The combination is intended to support demand for capabilities that counter unmanned threats and sustain communications in challenging electromagnetic conditions, ARA said Thursday.

What Capabilities Do ARA & Empower RF Bring Together?

ARA, acquired by OceanSound Partners in 2024, provides antennas, apertures and radio frequency subsystems for aerospace and defense customers. Empower RF offers high-power solid-state RF and microwave amplifiers.

The companies’ technologies address applications such as counter-unmanned aircraft systems, electronic warfare, satellite communications ground infrastructure, radar and threat simulation. Empower RF’s amplifiers are already used in these areas, while ARA’s antennas and apertures are designed for systems with size, weight, power and cost constraints.

How Does the Merger Fit ARA’s Strategy?

ARA President and CEO Bill Gattle said the goal is to create a single provider of RF capabilities, from antennas and amplifiers to networks, for defense, space and national security missions.

“Empower RF is a natural fit. Its amplifier technology is proven in demanding environments, and inside contested spectrum, power and aperture cannot be engineered in isolation,” Gattle added.

Empower RF CEO Jon Jacocks said the merger combines his team’s amplifier engineering with ARA’s antenna expertise, giving the combined business the scale and technical capabilities to reach more customers and systems.

What Other Growth Initiatives Has ARA Pursued?

The merger is part of ARA’s broader growth efforts, which have also included leadership appointments focused on operations and business development.

In March, ARA appointed Jay Abendroth as chief growth officer. He is responsible for business development and growth strategy, including strengthening strategic partnerships, working with customers in the defense and aerospace markets, and identifying contract opportunities aligned with ARA’s capabilities.

In January, ARA named Frank Morgan chief operating officer, tasking him with overseeing functions including engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain and program management as the company pursues its growth strategy.
