State Department Clears Italy’s Proposed Purchase of 100 JASSM-ER Missiles for $301M

The Department of State has approved a possible foreign military sale of 100 AGM-158B/B-2 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles with Extended Range, or JASSM-ER, and related equipment to the government of Italy. The proposed transaction is valued at an estimated $301 million, with Lockheed Martin to serve as principal contractor, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Friday.

What Is Included in Italy’s FMS?

Italy’s request covers JASSM classified test equipment and containers, KGV-135A encryption devices, spare and repair parts, consumables, accessories, repair and return support, weapon system software, technical documentation, transportation support, site surveys and U.S. government and contractor services.

JASSM-ER is a cruise missile developed for long-range, precision engagement in support of air-to-ground missions. The AGM-158B-2 upgrade gives the two-decades-old weapon system a modernized Missile Control Unit and a new JASSM GPS Anti-jam Receiver.

According to Lockheed Martin, JASSM is compatible with F-35 Lightning II strike fighters and other U.S. military aircraft.

How Will the Sale Support Italy’s Defense?

DSCA said the proposed sale would advance U.S. foreign policy and national security goals by strengthening a NATO ally.

The package is expected to enhance Italy’s ability to address current and future threats through stand-off, long-range strike capability for use on Italian fighter aircraft, including F-35s.

Italy also recently secured State Department approval to purchase Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles for $211 million. RTX will serve as the principal contractor for the FMS.
