Exclusive: CIA’s Top AI Official Previews Remarks Ahead of AI Summit

At the 2023 AI Summit, from Potomac Officers Club, Central Intelligence Agency Director of Artificial Intelligence Lakshmi Raman discussed the importance of prioritizing AI in light of the mounting sophistication of near-peer adversaries like China and Iran’s autonomous arsenals.

“AI-enhanced technology across all sectors of society brings with it great possibilities and even greater threats from our adversaries than we have known in the past,” Raman said at the event. She will return to the Potomac Officers Club stage on March 21 at the 5th Annual AI Summit to deliver a keynote address that builds on her remarks from last year and offers new insights into the CIA’s AI plans for the future. Register here now!

Raman — whose organization is famously tight-lipped — recently spoke with GovCon Wire ahead of the upcoming summit to give a preview of what those in attendance will learn.

“Last year when I addressed this conference, I described the CIA’s AI strategy and approach to implementation which emphasized the ongoing evolution of our AI infrastructure and the education of our workforce at all levels regarding AI. We continue to emphasize these priorities,” Raman said.

Last year, Raman was adamant that any new AI implementations are mindful of “individual rights and liberties of individuals and use data obtained lawfully.” She also assured the audience that incorporating human judgment and accountability was a critical concern for the CIA for risk mitigation and decision-making purposes.

“Moving forward in light of the White House’s recent Executive Order on AI, the CIA continues to focus on driving adoption of AI in a safe, secure and trustworthy manner while simultaneously fostering innovation,” Raman told us.

“In addition, we are addressing critical issues such as increasing human-machine teaming, leveraging public-private partnerships to solve our mission challenges, and democratizing access to AI across the Agency,” she added.

To gain exclusive access to Raman’s full thoughts and a glimpse into where the CIA’s AI office is headed, register now to attend the March 21st 5th Annual AI Summit. In addition to Raman, speakers include DARPA’s Dr. Kathleen Fisher and DOD Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office Chief Technology Officer Dr. Bill Streilein, among many others. The day will be stacked with networking opportunities and fascinating, cutting edge information.
