Mark Baird, a retired Air Force brigadier general, has been named president of Virgin Orbit’s VOX Space subsidiary.
He brings to the role over three decades of aerospace experience as VOX Space works to further advance the delivery of launch services in support of customers in the national security community, the company said Tuesday.
“Mark has been a key leader across the national security space community over a distinguished career. He has unparalleled insights into how the space architecture must quickly evolve to maintain a critical edge for our nation and our allies,” said Virgin Orbit CEO Dan Hart.
Baird most recently served as principal director of strategy at Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT).
His three-decade career in the national security space sector included time as deputy director of the National Reconnaissance Office; director of space acquisition for the office of the secretary of the Air Force; director of Space Superiority Systems; and vice commander of the Space and Missile Systems Center. He also served as the Space Force Planning Task Force’s deputy director at the Pentagon.
