Heather Murren, a financial services industry veteran who has served on the board of managers at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory since 2013, began serving as chair of the same board on July 1.
She succeeds Michael Hankin, who led APL’s board of managers over the past six years and will continue to serve as vice chair of the board of trustees for Johns Hopkins Medicine, the university-affiliated nonprofit research organization said Thursday.
Murren started her career on Wall Street in the late 1980s and established the Nevada Cancer Institute in 2002. She was selected to serve on the President’s Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity in 2016 under the Obama administration and appointed to the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission in 2009 to analyze the domestic and international causes of the financial crisis.
The private investor also serves as a member of the boards of directors at Fidelity National Financial, Johns Hopkins University, LifeSprout and Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Additionally, she is part of the advisory boards at Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures and the Howard University Center for Women, Gender and Global Leadership.
