John Sherman, chief information officer of the U.S. intelligence community, said the National Security Agency plans to release in March a solicitation for a program to update the on-premise GovCloud platform, FedScoop reported Wednesday.
The Hybrid Compute Initiative “will be tailored to address the massive processing and analytical requirements that NSA has, the software that must … run at very honed specifications on bare metal hardware and cloud computing that must be bought in bulk given … the data quantities and processing demands at NSA,” Sherman said Wednesday at an AFCEA NOVA conference.
HCI will rely on vendors for “bulk-priced” cloud computing, hardware as a service and other managed services. Sherman added that the HCI acquisition would help NSA get out of some of its legacy data hosting facilities and data centers.
The announcement of the new initiative came four months after the CIA issued a presolicitation for the potential $10B Commercial Cloud Enterprise contract.
