The Department of Energy will award up to $625M over five years to support the establishment of as many as five centers to advance research in the field of quantum information science.
DOE said Friday it expects each QIS center to incorporate a multidisciplinary team of researchers from industry, national laboratories, academic institutions, nonprofits and federal agencies.
"The National Quantum Initiative launched by the President, including these new research centers, leverages the combined strengths of academia, industry and DOE laboratories to drive QIS breakthroughs,” said Michael Kratsios,U.S. chief technology officer and a 2019 Wash100 awardee.
The department plans to begin awarding funds during the current fiscal year via a peer-review selection process.
The National Quantum Initiative Act supports QIS research and development efforts as well as other programs at DOE, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Science Foundation.
