US OKs South Korea's KDX-II Destroyer Modernization FMS

The State Department has approved a request from South Korea to procure items intended to enhance its fleet of KDX-II destroyers.

The potential foreign military sale, valued at an estimated $300 million, also covers related logistics supporting the nation’s KDX-II Class Destroyers Product Improvement Program, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Monday. The agency has also notified Congress of the FMS request.

Under the potential deal, BAE Systems will serve as the principal contractor for the possible sale and additional contractors will be determined later. Modified MK 99 fire control system cabinets and updated Weapon Direct System software modification, integration and installation will be provided to South Korea.

South Korea will also purchase publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, U.S. government and contractor engineering and technical and logistics support services.

The Asian nation aims to strengthen its anti-surface and anti-air warfare capabilities to bolster national security and defense against regional threats. The potential deal would enable the South Korean Navy to maintain the ship class’ operational readiness.

Eight U.S. government and 20 contractor personnel will be required to stay temporarily in South Korea to provide support to the program, including technical oversight, reviews, installation and training.
