AFRL’s Mark Linderman Says Information Is Currency at Tactical Edge, Including Space Domain

The U.S. military is perpetually involved in and stationed at remote locations where communications can be lacking and technological systems are often insufficient. These outposts and zones are commonly referred to as “the tactical edge” and government contractors have spent the last few years working to build technologies that can bolster command and control in such demanding conditions.

Combined with issues like the prevalence of cybersecurity threats over the past few years, the demands of the tactical edge make information a top resource and information-sharing a key concern.

“Information is often the thread that weaves together disparate technologies,” stated Dr. Mark Linderman, chief scientist of the Air Force Research Lab’s Information Directorate. He shared that due to this, his branch often works closely with other directorates from the AFRL “all along the path from sensing to decision making.”

Dr. Linderman will be the opening keynote speaker at the Potomac Officers Club’s Workloads at the Tactical Edge Forum, where he will illuminate some of AFRL’s recent work in this area and point to partnership opportunities. The breakfast event will be held at Falls Church, Virginia’s 2941 Restaurant on the morning of Feb. 8. Register here to save your seat — spots are limited and expected to fill up quickly.

Dr. Linderman also said that the Information Directorate has increasingly collaborated with the Space Vehicles Directorate due to efforts to make progress and developments in the contested space domain, which is a key frontier of the tactical edge.

Closing out the crucial, riveting POC event will be a keynote address from La’Naia Jones, chief information officer and director of the information technology enterprise at the Central Intelligence Agency. Jones will follow up her thoughts from GovCon Wire’s Second Annual Defense and Intelligence: IT Modernization Forum in Oct. 2022. During the prior event, she highlighted data, automation and cloud migration as principles the CIA is currently incorporating.

To hear Jones provide an update as to what the famously secretive CIA is working on currently with regard to the tactical edge, register for the Potomac Officers Club’s Feb. 8th Workloads at the Tactical Edge Forum. You won’t want to miss this important morning of discussion and networking!
