Northrop to Continue NextGen Polar Satellite Development Under $235M SSC Award

Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) will continue working on Next Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared Polar Space Vehicles 1 and 2 under a $235 million contract modification from Space Systems Command.

The Department of Defense said Thursday the award raises the contract’s total cumulative face value to $2.15 billion and covers work at the company’s Redondo Beach, California, location until July 25, 2026.

The polar-orbiting satellites will be used to monitor the northern polar region, serving as a key element in strategic missile warning for national security.

According to Northrop, NextGen Polar will be equipped with modernized sensors to cover the entire northern hemisphere and advance the U.S. missile warning mission. Its enhanced communication system will also enable the transmission of wide-band OPIR data to the ground.
