Gilbane-Zueblin JV to Build US Military’s Largest Overseas Hospital Under $969M Contract

A joint venture between Rhode Island-based construction firm Gilbane and German engineering company Zueblin has secured a $969 million contract to build a hospital for the U.S. Army at a military garrison in Kaiserslautern, Germany.

For the Rhine Ordnance Barracks Medical Center Replacement project, the industry team will construct a 985,000-square-foot facility with nine operating rooms, 120 examination rooms and 68 beds, the Army said Thursday.

The facility, which will become the largest U.S. medical institution overseas upon completion, is designed for treatment of U.S. service members, civilians and contractors in Europe, Africa and Central and Southwest Asia.

Once completed in late 2027, the campus will replace the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and co-locate the 86th Medical Group Clinic in Germany.

The ROBMCR contract was awarded by the German government in partnership with the Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District, and the Defense Health Agency.
