General Atomics Buys Opto-Electronic Tech Maker Synopta; Scott Forney Quoted

General Atomics has acquired Synopta, a Switzerland-based developer of opto-electronic instrumentation for terrestrial and space applications, for an undisclosed sum.

Scott Forney, president of General Atomics’ electromagnetic systems group, said in a statement published Monday the acquired company will operate as General Atomics Synopta, establish a technical center of excellence and expand its European client base with the addition of customers in the U.S. and other countries.

Forney added that Synopta’s developments and expertise in communications, stationary and transportable optical ground systems, beam control and pointing assemblies will enable General Atomics to expand its portfolio of sensors, ground systems and laser communications to deliver platforms to government clients.

Established in 2004, Synopta also provides technical and strategic consultancy services to a range of national agencies, European organizations and international corporations in the areas of defense, space and capital goods.

“While continuing to operate in the Canton of St. Gallen as a Swiss company, we now have the opportunity to demonstrate the potential of true transatlantic co-operation in the hi-tech field”, said Jens Kunde, general manager of GA Synopta.
