TYSONS CORNER, VA, January 10, 2018 — Premier (Nasdaq: PINC), a North Carolina-based health care company, has found that patients who experience an opioid overdose account for an estimated $11.3B in total annual costs at U.S. hospitals, with 66 percent of those patients covered under the federal Medicaid and Medicare programs, ExecutiveBiz reported Monday.

“This analysis shows that on top of losing family members and friends to this epidemic, it’s costing consumers and taxpayers, as well as hospitals,” Roshni Ghosh, vice president and chief medical information officer at Premier, said Jan. 3.

She noted the need to provide “frontline solutions” to health systems and emergency caregivers to prevent the spread of opioid addiction, as well as Premier’s work via the Premier Healthcare Database to provide data-based insights that help shape health system efforts to address the epidemic.
