Orbital ATK (NYSE: OA) has secured a potential $119 million contract to help the U.S. Army develop 120-millimeter ammunition for the Abrams Main Battle Tank.
The company said Wednesday it will support the development and qualification of the service branch’s Advanced Multi-Purpose round over a 30-month period under the contract’s base term valued at $45 million.
The AMP tank is designed to protect warfighters against anti-tank guided missile threats as well as break into bunkers and double-reinforced concrete walls.
Orbital ATK noted that Abrams gunners can use the tank’s fire control system via an ammunition data link to program the AMP fuze for air burst or point detonating operations.
The contract includes three options for the initial and full-scale production of the AMP rounds.
