General Dynamics‘ (NYSE: GD) Canada-based land systems subsidiary has secured a $309.8 million contract modification to update the country’s light armored vehicle fleet.General Dynamics said Monday the contract will cover work to boost the performance and survivability of Canada’s 141 Light Armored Vehicle III fleet as well as maintain the consistency and availability of equipment used in training and deployments.
LAV III was created to meet a demand for greater payload and protection levels and has been used a base for command post, engineer, forward observation officer vehicles, infantry section carriers, tow-under armor and remote weapon systems.
“We are committed to delivering highly protected, flexible and capable vehicles to our soldiers,” said Danny Deep, vice president of General Dynamics Land Systems–Canada.
The company noted that the LAV III Upgrade program will transform the vehicles to meet the new LAV 6.0 configuration and cover double-V hull, protection and mobility modifications as well as onboard vetronics and a capacity for modularity.
General Dynamics received an $816.2 million contract from the Canadian government in October 2011 to update 550 of the country’s fleet of LAV III units and extend the life of the combat vehicles to 2035.
