Julius Genachowski, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission between June 2009 and May 2013, has joined private equity firm The Carlyle Group as a managing director and partner for the U.S. buyout team.

Genachowski will work out of Washington and help the firm identify opportunities to investment in the global technology, media and telecommunications sectors, Carlyle said Monday.

Prior to heading the FCC, Genachowski served as a senior executive at Internet and media company IAC/InterActiveCorp and that company credits him with growing the business to more than $6 billion in annual revenue and more than 25, 000 employees around the world.

“It’s an exciting time in the space, with an ongoing wave of innovation creating significant opportunities for investment, ” Genachowski said.

“Deep industry specialization is core to our investment strategy and Julius brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to these sectors, ” said Peter Clare, co-head of Carlyle’s U.S. buyout team.

While at the FCC, Genachowski worked to prioritize innovations and investments in broadband Internet technologies and to free up wireless communications spectrum.

He also focused on public safety communications and the agency’s international partnerships.
