General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) will likely provide the U.S. Army with up to $296.4 million in battlefield manpack radios meant for 2013 deployment in Afghanistan, according to a Sept. 24 NextGov report.

Bob Brewin writes that pending the results of certain development tests, the West Falls Church, Va.-based contractor will supply around 3, 800 of the radios for use by infantry brigades on a low rate initial production contract.

Chris Marzilli, president of General Dynamics C4 Systems, told the publication that the tests will attempt, in part, to “validate the effectiveness of the updates we’ve made to the manpack.”

Brewin said Frank Kendall, undersecretary of Defense for acquisition, technology and logistics, will then make a decision on the contract award.

The radios operate as part of the Joint Tactical Radio System and boot up “like a personal computer to operate, ” according to Brewin’s report.
