Walt Havenstein on SAIC’s Major Donation to U.S. Naval Academy

SAIC (NYSE: SAI) has donated $250, 000 to the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation to support the creation of a Center for Cyber Security Studies at the academy. Creation of the center is part of the Navy’s increased focus on cybersecurity and cyber warfare. Last fall, the Navy reactivated its 10th Fleet as the U.S. Navy’s Fleet Cyber Command/10th Fleet. The command will serve as the naval component within U.S. Cyber Command.

The center will enhance educational opportunities available to midshipmen, faculty and staff by supporting the study of cybersecurity and cyber warfare, and will serve as a center for curricular innovation, community outreach, and learning. SAIC Senior Vice President and Business Unit General Manager Larry Cox presented the donation to the academy on March 3.

“SAIC is a leading private sector center of cyber expertise. We understand how critical this field is to the future of this nation, ” said SAIC Chief Executive Officer Walt Havenstein. “In addition, we strongly support STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education, which is, of course, something at which the academy excels. Helping the academy maintain its excellence in this crucial field is therefore doubly appropriate for SAIC.”
