Alliant Techsystems (ATK), the largest small arms ammunition supplier to the US military, has received orders worth $93 million from the US Army Sustainment Command for small caliber ammunition. The ammunition requests cover the major small arms calibers utilized by the US military.
ATK supplies standard small arms ammunition, including 5.56, 7.62, .50-caliber and 20mm. The additional orders are for 5.56, 7.62 and .50-caliber, all of which are used in major US small arms. To date for 2009, ATK has supplied 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition to the US Army. The main weapons used by the US military include the M-16, M-4, M249 SAW, which utilize the 5.56 round, M240 and M-14, which use 7.62 and the M2 Browning .50-caliber machine gun.
