IBM to Buy In-Q-Tel Backed Database Service Provider Cloudant; Sean Poulley Comments

acquisitionIBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) has agreed to buy database service provider Cloudant Inc. for an undisclosed amount in order for IBM to grow its big data and analytics, cloud computing and mobile offerings.

Cloudant will operate within IBM’s information and analytics business unit, part of the software and systems group, led by Bob Picciano, IBM senior vice president, IBM said Monday.

The Boston, Ma.-based business will be integrated into IBM’s cloud portfolio in order to help mobile and web application developers assess and deploy apps on various hosting layers by using Cloudant’s resources.

Sean Poulley, vice president of databases and data warehousing at IBM, said Cloudant operates to aid in the clients’ delivery of apps to the marketplace.

Developers use Cloudant’s JSON cloud-based service to store and access mobile data through an application programming interface.

The transaction is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2014.
