Young Bang’s Contributions to Military Technology Initiatives

Project Linchpin

Project Linchpin is a joint effort of Army Futures Command’s Artificial Intelligence Integration Center, Development Command, Army Research Labs and Office of the Secretary of Defense / Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Office. It aims to create trusted environments for developing and implementing AI within the U.S. Army, following the Biden administration’s and the Department of Defense’s initiatives.

Senior Army officials, including Bang, fully support the Army’s evolving approach in advancing Project Linchpin. In a conference in Philadelphia, Bang mentioned that the military branch is considering an AI Bill of Materials (BOM) to manage potential security risks.

“Just like we’re securing our supply chain — semiconductors, components, subcomponents — we’re also thinking about that from a digital perspective. So we’re looking at software, data and AI,” he explained.

#DefendAI is a conceptual security initiative launched by the U.S. Army on the development of a layered defense framework for testing artificial intelligence. The U.S. Army is seeking industry input on constructing this framework to guarantee the secure adoption of commercial AI technologies.

“We really do appreciate industry support here. We do need your help,” Bang stated during a conference. “This framework is going to be an attempt to really help us accelerate the adoption of third-party-generated algorithms,” he added.

Data Management and 5G Technologies

Bang has advocated for rethinking data management strategies to support the adoption of 5G technologies. During the National Training and Simulation Association’s Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference, he emphasized the need for secure architectures and application programming interfaces to maximize the potential of next-generation communications for the interoperability of warfighters.
