Whitworth would retain the rank of vice admiral if confirmed for the NGA director position, the Department of Defense said Monday.
He previously served as commander of the Joint Intelligence Center Central and commanding officer of the Navy Element of U.S. Central Command.
His operational tours in the Navy included time as director of intelligence for Joint Special Operations Command, U.S. Africa Command and for a special operations task force in Afghanistan during three deployments.
Whitworth also served as an intelligence briefer for the chief of naval operations and secretary of the Navy, senior duty officer at the White House Situation Room and Navy federal executive fellow to the American Enterprise Institute. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
