State Department OKs $134M Follow-On Aegis Destroyer Support Deal for Japan

The State Department has approved a proposed $134 million foreign military sales agreement for follow-on technical support to Japan’s destroyer ships that carry the Lockheed Martin-built (NYSE: LMT) Aegis Combat System.

A Defense Security Cooperation Agency notice posted Wednesday says the Japanese government asked to procure Aegis Class Destroyer sustainment services under a sale that also includes computer software updates; system integration, testing, overhaul and modernization testing; and field service engineering support

Japan’s maritime self-defense force is seeking access to software patches and configuration data to ensure the operational effectiveness and safety of the combat system.

DSCA said that in-country engineering and emergent services covered by the sale are intended to fix the ACS suite if a malfunction or fault occurs.

Seven U.S. government and contractor representatives will be temporarily assigned to Japan upon implementation of the sale, the agency noted.
