Spire Global has appointed Eric “Mell” Mellinger, a retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel, as chief commercial officer, effective Aug. 3.
The company said Friday Mellinger will be based at its headquarters in Vienna, Virginia.
What Are Mellinger’s Responsibilities as Chief Commercial Officer?
As chief commercial officer, Mellinger will manage Spire’s global commercial organization and help expand the company’s presence across government and commercial markets. He will also oversee Spire’s business development efforts, go-to-market strategy, sales, strategic partnerships and customer growth initiatives, as well as advance the implementation of the company’s long-term commercial strategy.
“Spire has built an exceptional foundation by combining innovative space infrastructure with data and analytics that help customers solve critical mission challenges,” said Mellinger. “I’m excited to join the team and work alongside our customers and partners to accelerate growth, strengthen our commercial strategy, and expand the impact of Spire’s technology across government and commercial markets.”

Spire Global CEO Theresa Condor said the company is focused on expanding its reach as demand for space-based intelligence grows across government and commercial markets.

His leadership will be instrumental as we continue to scale Spire’s commercial business and execute on our long-term vision,” Condor said.
Who Is Eric Mellinger?
Mellinger is a defense growth executive and retired Marine Corps colonel. He joins Spire from MANTECH, where he served as vice president for business development and growth leader for the defense and space sector.
Before MANTECH, Mellinger served as the House Armed Services Committee’s defense acquisition reform staff lead, where he helped develop legislation to modernize the Department of War’s procurement processes. His three-decade career in the Marine Corps included time serving in senior operational and strategic leadership positions, including senior military assistant in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy and chief of staff of the U.S. Marines in the Western Pacific
The U.S. Air Force Academy graduate holds a master’s degree in military studies from Marine Corps University and a master’s degree in national security strategy from the National Defense University.
