The U.S. Navy has exercised the fourth option under a potential $3.2 billion contract it awarded to Raytheon Missiles & Defense in 2022 for hardware production of the AN/SPY-6(V) family of radars.

The RTX business segment secured a $646.5 million modification, which requires work to be performed in Massachusetts, California, Maryland, Arizona, New York, Connecticut, Oklahoma, Indiana, Rhode Island and various locations across the United States through September 2028, the Department of Defense said Friday.

Defending Against National Security Threats

SPY-6 radars are designed for defending against hostile aircraft and various missile threats. RTX previously announced that it will manufacture SPY-6 hardware in solid-state, rotating and fixed-face variants for installation on seven types of Navy vessels, including the Arleigh Burke-class Flight III destroyers, aircraft carriers and amphibious ships.

When the third contract option, valued at $677 million, was exercised in June 2024, Barbara Borgonovi, president of naval power at Raytheon, said SPY-6 will provide the naval fleet with enhanced detection, electronic warfare protection and air surveillance capabilities.

In April 2024, the USS Richard M. McCool Jr. San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock equipped with the radar was handed over to the Navy.
