Rocket Lab Finalizes Motiv Acquisition, Expands Mars & Orbital Infrastructure Capabilities

  • Rocket Lab has expanded deeper into space robotics through the acquisition of Motiv Space Systems
  • The deal aims to strengthen Rocket Lab’s push into Mars exploration and orbital infrastructure
  • Motiv will now operate as Rocket Lab Robotics

Rocket Lab has acquired Motiv Space Systems, a company that develops space robotics, motion control systems and precision mechanisms for spacecraft. The move is intended to strengthen the company’s capabilities in planetary exploration and orbital infrastructure, Rocket Lab said Tuesday.

Rocket Lab Finalizes Motiv Acquisition, Expands Mars & Orbital Infrastructure Capabilities

Industry efforts to advance planetary exploration and orbital infrastructure are driving innovations across the space sector. Broader discussions around emerging technologies and future mission challenges will take center stage at the Potomac Officers Club’s 2026 Air and Space Summit on July 30. Register now.

What Capabilities Does Motiv Bring to Rocket Lab?

Motiv, now operating as Rocket Lab Robotics, has supported NASA programs, including the Mars Perseverance rover and CADRE lunar rovers. The company is known for developing robotic arms, actuators and precision drive electronics used in spacecraft systems and scientific instruments.

Rocket Lab said the acquisition, which follows the definitive agreement to acquire Motiv signed early in May, positions the company to provide integrated Mars mission offerings that combine launch services, spacecraft, software and robotics. The company said the expanded portfolio could support future opportunities such as Mars sample return efforts, telecommunications networks around Mars and national security missions requiring autonomous robotics.

As part of the deal, Motiv’s approximately 50 employees and Pasadena, California, facilities will join Rocket Lab’s global manufacturing and development network.

Rocket Lab founder and CEO Peter Beck said the acquisition gives the company the technologies needed to support future Mars exploration and advanced space infrastructure missions from a single provider.

How Does the Acquisition Support Orbital Infrastructure?

The deal also expands Rocket Lab’s ability to manufacture spacecraft mechanisms used in satellite constellations and emerging orbital data center projects. These systems include solar array drive assemblies, propulsion gimbals and antenna mechanisms designed for high-power space platforms.

Rocket Lab said the Motiv acquisition strengthens its vertically integrated space systems business as demand grows for orbital infrastructure supporting cloud computing, artificial intelligence workloads and space-based data storage. The deal also continues Rocket Lab’s broader acquisition strategy, following its purchases of Optical Support Inc., laser communications provider Mynaric and electro-optical and infrared sensor systems developer Geost, to expand its national security and satellite communications capabilities.
